WAZA
The Salzburg Zoo is a member of the “World Association of Zoos and Aquaria” (WAZA). This global organization coordinates the principles and activities of over 1.000 zoos and aquaria, with over 600 million visitors per year.

A special example for the coordinated work amongst the participants is the success story of the Przewalski horse (Takhi): Since 1950, the ancestor of our domestic horse was bred in zoos. In 1968, the last wild horse was seen in its natural habitat, which used to be the vast grasslands of central Asia. The Przewalski horse was able to survive in zoos though.

In 1967, the Salzburg Zoo joined the project to save this endangered species and continued its work until today. Nowadays, wild horses from zoos are brought back into their former habitats, like the Mongolian Gobi desert, to re-establish a horse population; coordinated by the EEPs. The mare “Sonja” from the Salzburg Zoo also lives in the Gobi desert since 2002. This is a success story concerning the international protection of nature and species.

The WAZA wants:
To foster the coordination of zoological gardens and aquaria in the area of nature- and species protection, and also support the breeding and husbandry of animals.
To promote the coordination of national and regional associations and their members.
To support nature formation, protection of nature and environmental research.
To work together with the representatives of zoological gardens and aquaria in other international organizations or unions.
To promote the coordination with other nature protection organizations.
To reach the highest standards of animal husbandry.
